Encouraging empathy for the displaced through a video collaboration with the UNHCR

A spot in collaboration with the UNHCR in honor of National Refugee Day.

Aiming to move beyond the war-torn imagery that normally dominates coverage of refugees in media, the goal was to generate a more powerful emotion than sympathy in viewers: Empathy.

Challenge

Highlighting the difficulty and inherent relatability of the cultural assimilation process for refugees.

Creative Insight

Our aim was to foster compassion through relatability – because if the first day of school or the first day behind the wheel of a car is hard for you, how much more difficult must new milestones be for refugees forced to make a life in a foreign country?

Outcomes

  • 1M+ views and shares across platforms

  • Online comments and reactions in myriad languages, reflecting that this was indeed a message for all mankind
